Camp Thank You Letters

For camp we wrote letters to thank people for coming on camp. Here is my letter.

20 November 2018

Dear Scott

Thank you for coming on camp with us.  I really enjoyed camp. Thank you for taking me in the car too. I enjoyed working with you in the activities.  🏕

One of  my favourite things was the river crossing.  The water was REALLY cold . I was in a group with: Billie, Dakota, Mackenzie and Summer. When we got out all of us wanted to go again. My group went 3 times.  When we finished my feet were  frozen!!❄

Another one of my favourite things was the water pipe challenge. I was at the bottom so I got saturated.  My team won so then we helped the other teams and I got even MORE wet. By the end I was wet from head to toe . So when I got back I had a nice hot shower. 🌊

I also enjoyed the Squawk Squad activity. It was when you had to follow a map and try and find things (we had to find predators and  letters). My group had to walk along the Devils Punchbowl track. At first we had trouble reading the map but soon we got the hang of it. My group had to find a blue duck. It was at the post office. 📬

My favourite food  was the self saucing cake with Ice cream.🍦 The thing I missed from home was my bed.

Thank you again. Did you enjoy camp? I did. Ngā mihi
Yours sincerely
Sasha. 😉

Descriptive Writing

At the moment in class we have been working on descriptive writing. We have been using pictures to give us ideas of what to write about. Here is a peice if writing I did.

The Abandoned Cottage
As I walk through the  peaceful forest the sky suddenly turns grey. I feel rain thumping on my head. With panic I spin around looking for some shelter. Suddenly something catches my eye. I sprint towards it and arrive at an overgrown, stone  cottage. I stare with wonder. What happened here? Is anyone in there? I run my hand over its rough, stoney edges and look up at its moss covered roof. There is a huge pohutakawa tree growing out of the shattered roof.

Suddenly there is a clatter and a bang from inside the cottage. “Hello,” I say nervously “Is anyone there ?” Something draws me closer. I can hear my heart pounding in my chest. When I reach a hole in the front I peek my head through to see what's there. I see nothing and slowly go inside. The parauri (brown) roots of the pohutakawa tree are covering almost everything in the room. There is a fireplace in the corner furthest from the hole. Bits of rakau (wood) are everywhere. There is smell a slight smell of ash. It looked like this place hadn’t been abandoned very long.

The floor groans as I slowly back out. I look up at the beautiful whero (red) and kakariki (green) tree. I wish those surrounded the city. By now the rain has stopped but it’s really makariri (cold). Shivers run up my spine. I want to go but I know I will stumble across this place again someday.

Morepork Information Report

Rendered Image

What Are They?
Moreporks and native to New Zealand. Moreporks are nocturnal animals that means
that they sleep  in the day and go out at night. Moreporks are a type of owl. Unlike most
native birds moreporks are not endangered.
What Do They Look Like?
Moreporks are all different shades of brown and white. Moreporks have very big
kowhai (yellow) eyes. Ruru (Morepork) have lots of fluffy feathers to keep them warm in
the winter.
Where Are They Found?
Ruru (moreporks) are found in forests all over New Zealand. Moreporks are uncommon
in drier eastern areas.  Moreporks are endemic to New Zealand. That means that they
are only found in New Zealand.
Feeding Behaviour?
Ruru (Moreporks) eat a variety of different things, including small animals,  large insects,
small birds and small mammals. To catch their prey they fly silently then they swoop
down and catch their prey with their beak or long sharp talons. Moreporks can their
heads 270° to see if danger is coming.
Breeding
Moreporks breed in raumati (summer) and koanga (spring). They normally build their
nests in dead or alive trees and broken logs. Moreporks lay one to three eggs. Both
adults stay and look after and feed the chicks. Usually only one chick will live because
of food supply and the others might get eaten by predators.
Threats
Moreporks threats are cats, weasels, possums, rats, pigs and hedgehogs. They protect
themselves with strong, sharp beaks and talons. The human threats to moreporks are
that we are chopping down trees that they build the nests in, so they have nowhere to
live. To look after them in the future we could plant more trees for their homes.
We could also help them by trying to kill all the their predators to help them survive.

Reducing Plastic

As part of our learning about the environment this term, we have been thinking of ways of reduce the amount of waste in our lunch box and everyday. We have made reusable material bags to use instead of plastic bags. It took awhile to make all of the material bags.  We also made beeswax wrap to use instead of beeswax wrap. Room 7 are encouraging people to use these alternatives instead of single use plastic bags or  glad wrap.  I found grating the beeswax quite challenging. I really enjoyed making them both. To make beeswax wrap you get a peice of cotton and sprinkle grated beeswax on top. After that you put a peice of baking paper on top then iron it until the beeswax is melted. Then you take the baking paper off ( be careful it will be hot) and hang it to dry. It only takes about 1 minute.

We are looking at using non-fiction text to increase our knowledge in our science topic; SPACE. Your aim is to read and understand the timeline reading and use this knowledge to complete the reading activity below.

First, Read the timeline cards. Click here for the space timeline pdf

Second, We will discuss what you have read. This will be a good time to ask questions about anything you are unsure of.

Third, do your reading tasks.

Fourth, complete your reading activity. Remember to proofread, check spelling and punctuation. Then do a self assessment and a peer assessment. Check it with a teacher.

Reading Activity

View and read the space timeline on the classroom walls. Think about how how our theories/ideas and understandings about the universe and Earth’s place in it has changed over time.

Answer the following questions.
Your answers need to be full sentences.
After you have answered all the questions please put them in chronological order (time order, oldest first)

5) What are two things that Galileo discovered?
Galileo discovered Jupiter's moon,  lunar craters and the different phases of Venus. (1610)

9) Who discovered the first asteroid?
The first asteroid was discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi. (1801)

2) What was Sputnik 1?
Sputnik 1 was the first satellite into space sent by Russia. (1957)

3) In what year was NASA founded? And what does NASA mean Nasa means National Aeronautics and Space Administration and it was founded in 1958.

6) Who was the first woman in space? And where was she from?
The first woman is space was Valentina Tereshkova. She was from Russia. (1963)

It took nearly 7 years for the Cassini probe to arrive at Saturn. (2004)

12) What was interesting about New Horizons information about Pluto?
Pluto is fifty miles longer than they thought. (2015)

YOUR OPINION
After reading this information...

  1. Who do you think made the biggest contribution to our understanding of space? Why? (summarising key ideas)
I think Galileo Galilei made the biggest contribution to space because he built the first telescope to see space. The telescope has helped us see the night sky. That lead to telescopes improving over the years so we can get a better image of space.  He also discovered Jupiter's moons, the different phases of Venus and lunar craters.
    2) What do you think was the most important machine or        invention in helping us investigate space? Why? (summarising key ideas)I think the most important machine was satellites because they take pictures of space. You can't see lots through a telescope so pictures from satellites will help see much more.  With the pictures we can see a lot of the solar system. Satellites also send signals back down to earth. These pictures have show us in our solar system.

    3) What would you like to investigate about space? Why?
I would like to learn more about space stations because I know nothing about them. I would like to know what country/countries run the space station. I would also like to know who made the space station.
-The United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada are all involved with the international space station.
-Click here for videos of the ISS (international space station.)
-The ISS is about 390 kilometers above Earth's surface
-The construction  on the ISS began in 1998.
-The ISS was American funded.
- The International Space Station might be completed by the end of this decade. When construction is finished, six crew members will be able to live and work in a space bigger than a typical five-bedroom house.
